What to Expect
During your first visit, we will evaluate your posture and movement patterns to determine areas of weakness, and areas of tension. Using what we find during your evaluation, a custom plan will be created to retrain your body to move more efficiently. We will begin your exercises during your evaluation visit. Please wear comfortable clothing.
Why Corrective Exercise?
The goal of corrective exercise is to retrain our body to move the way that it is built to move. Repetitive movements and poor posture lead to muscle imbalances which lead to improper use of the body that can lead to pain and even injury. For example, an individual who has a desk job is likely to have slouched shoulders for a majority of their day. Sitting slouched all day teaches the brain to keep the shoulders slouched all of the time. When shoulders are rounded forward, the head falls forward causing the muscles in the back of the neck to become chronically tight. Those chronically tight neck muscles can then lead to headaches and neck pain. A massage focused on relieving the neck pain is sort of like putting a bandage on the issue. Instead, the focus should be correcting the rounded shoulders.
While massage and stretching will help to loosen tight muscles, the results will only last so long. The weak muscles need to be strengthened and your brain needs to be retrained to use them. During your evaluation, we will create your custom program.
Corrective Exercise is NOT physical therapy. If you are experiencing any acute pain or have had a recent injury/surgery, corrective exercise is not appropriate.
